- Two men arrested yesterday at Kariobangi-Nairobi County repackaging expired rice will stay in police custody to allow police conclude investigations against them.
The two, John Mbugua Kariuki and Jeremiah Kuria Kimani will be remanded at Parklands Police station.
“I authorize the respondents to be held at Parklands police station for a period of 10 days and that they be produced in court on 27th of May 2019,”magistrate ruled.
In a miscellaneous application the investigating officer says that they are investigating into cases of selling unwholesome food adding that during arrest the two were found repackaging several bags of assorted expired rice into bags of foreign brands with extended expiry dates.
“The recovered rice is unwholesome and not fit for human consumption,’’ court heard.
Similarly the court was told that the two are suspected to have supplied rice and other foods stuffs unfit for human consumption and therefore it is necessary to carry out investigations to the suspected supplied markets all over the country of which it requires a lot of time.
Further the prosecution said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the investigations team require to further its investigation to the port of Mombasa to authenticate the provided import documents and also visit representatives of the foreign companies whose packaging bags were found being used by the respondents for collection of samples and statement recording.
