John Mwendwa in Court after filing a case challenging the suspension of her dreadlocked daughter from Olympic High School in Kibera.

The father of a 15 year old girl who was kicked out of Olympic high school in Kibera, over dreadlocks has now moved to Court seeking to have the institution compelled to re-admit her.

Under a Ceritificate of urgency John Mwendwa wants the Board of Governors of the School ordered to allow her resume her studies unconditionally.He has also sued the Ministry of Education and the Attorney General.Mwendwa claims that his daughter’s Constitutional right to Education and religion have been violated .

In his suit ,Mwendwa says that his wife and five children are ardent followers of the Rastafarian religion.He says that her daughter’s dreadlocks are not a fashion statement but a clear distinction between them and non – rastas.Through lawyer Shadrack Wambui Mwendwa told Justice Pauline Nyamweya that his daughter who was excited after joining the school is now feeling sorry for herself .

He added that his child she was inhumanely summoned and expelled by the Deputy head teachers who told her she would only be re-admitted after shaving the dreadlocks.The father wants the School to compensate him for unlawful suspension.

The father has accused the School’s Principal of bieng arrogant.“The Head- master arrogantly banged the table and dismissed without giving me an but none the less insisted that he cannot accomodate rasta’s in school”,he states.Mwendwa adds that the conduct of the school Administration has left her daughter with low self esteem and worth.He also wants the Court to declare that her suspension from the School on the basis of her Rastafarian inclination is a violation of her human rights.
The matter will be heard on January 16,2018 for further directions.
